Presenting a
Julian Easter Calculator
The following calculator exclusively uses the Julian method to find the date of Easter, which is currently used by most of Eastern Christianity and the cultures it has influenced. This holiday is often called ‘Orthodox Easter’ to distinguish it from the Easter more widely celebrated in the West. The Julian method was the standard method throughout Europe from around the tenth century until 1582, when the Catholic Church instituted the Gregorian calendar and the Gregorian method of determining the date of Easter. Most of Western Christianity would eventually follow suit. The British Empire (encompassing many modern anglophone countries) last used the Julian method for the Easter of 1752.
The calculator mainly uses the Julian calendar. However, years can also be entered from the Coptic and Ethiopian calendars, which are synchronised with the Julian calendar. The date of Julian Easter is also given in the Gregorian and Revised Julian calendars, although these calendars are not synchronised with the Julian calendar or each other.
